That otherwise successful and secure office workers are forced to work long overtime hours unnecessarily is absolutely a problem culturally unique to Japan. Like you yourself pointed out, this kind of overwork typically only happens in other countries as a symptom of poverty.

While you’re right about overwork in general, with respect to first world countries, Japan’s pretty singular by comparison in terms of death from overwork.
