I too was raised by straight laced parents intent on saving me from the perils of Halloween. The sorting thru the haul for any unwrapped or otherwise suspicious candies was a tradition and the duds were always studiously discarded. Surprisingly it was a rare occurrence that any of our neighbors ever gave out candy

Most likely the demo.  So, you are probably correct on that front.

Is this from people playing the early access release, or the previous demo?
The demo was much harder and ramped up the droughts very quickly, but was still manageable. The early access version, meanwhile, is easier than that by default and also has several difficulty levels.

You can fiddle with a ton of settings to make it as relaxed or difficult as you want. 

I adore this game. If this was all it was I'd be happy with my purchase. I'm very excited for future updates. 

If it was, they would have Maple Syrup being the 2nd system to care about after water management.
