Honestly, I don't think asking the father of cell phones about smart phones make any sense. Smart phones are really phones only in name- they're really just the next evolution of PCs that have phone capabilities.

Yeah, I'd love to know what scratched it- I have a year old 3Gs which I've never had in a case and I've never gotten a scratch on the 'normal' glass or even noticeable ones on the back plastic.

I asked some of my adult students when I was teaching in Japan- and they said it was so you can use them in public restrooms- which may not provide toilet paper.
