Subaru says that by focusing on one body style instead of two, they were able to make the sedan better than if they divided their efforts between a sedan and wagon. I got a WRX despite it being a sedan, not because of it. I would’ve preferred a wagon/hatch. And I’d definitely consider a Crosstrek WRX/STI. You’re right about the rally angle, too. I’ve seen a first gen Crosstrek run course opening at a rally, and it did well. Ryan Millen dominates in a Toyota RAV4 rally “car.”

You could stick with VW and some Mk4 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition seats. They’re cloth, but have the right level of bolstering - not too much, not too little. Plus they’re heated, which would be a huge bonus to supplement the lacking heater output of the Beetle. (Full disclosure: my Jetta’s heat doesn’t work, either.)
