I think that the Mandarin has tried to pass off his powers as mystical in origin, on at least a few occasions, but they've always been from the rings he found from the alien crash site.

It's a frickin' movie. A comic book movie about a guy who wears a powered suit of armor. That flies. That doesn't turn him into a dripping sack of shattered bones and blood from godawful impacts and inertia. That shoots bolts of energy. That has a functioning (and sarcastic) A.I.
I think the argument could be made that the replicant makers would be the monsters.
