At least memory sticks were a standard and available from other manufacturers too, and could be used in other devices like laptops, PDAs and cameras. The PS Vita card is only for the PS Vita.

Not surprising. I mean, look at the Memory Stick required by the previous Sony handheld (PSP). Despite the fact that it was much cheaper and more convenient to use a standard SD Card, Sony still chose their expensive memory sticks. Thankfully there are now adapters so you can trick the PSP into taking an SD Card.
