Same (lass, not lad).  I kept trying to find the dark part of the candle you could stare into to make yourself psychic, but it never worked out for me.

The book is probably better, but still has the structural/thematic problems pointed out in this review (although in the book the uncle is not such a clean, entire dad replacement, and effect of the dad’s absence is more palpable). But: J.R. Moehringer ghost-wrote Andre Agassi’s Open and THAT is a kickass book that I

Diaz and Law, while both exceptionally good-looking blond(e)s, have zero romantic chemistry. Black and Winslet don’t really either, but 100% they read as people who enjoy each other’s company.

I agree with this and have been irritated in the past by the extent to which the majority of the Harry Potter series’ fans are unaware of its antecedents, but the series’ arc is kind of interesting as it relates to class: ultimately the institution itself is broken (although not irrevocably) and the main characters,

The British one is so great, it’s the cozy pandemic-appropriate sitcom I didn’t know I needed.

That’s lovely, thanks for sharing.  This one is hitting hard even though as others have noted she had a great run and went out the right way.

I wouldn’t dare to assert that “putting more effort forth” is incorrect and it should have been “putting forth more effort,” but I would like your thoughts on the two options.

I’m with you.  And disappointed because the Ice King (or whatever he was called) was my favorite character.

The pandemic broke us, natch.

I was in HS when Hook came out, and to me it was all about male Baby Boomers (i.e. my parents’ generation) feeling sorry for themselves. Similar to City Slickers, which came out the same year as Hook, in which a husband and father is so worn down by his nice, normal wife and kids and job that he needs a long adventure

I read Lauren Groff’s Matrix, which was good. I don’t think I need to see a lurid movie with unrealistically hot young nuns--who both have long hair for some reason, going by the pic. Like, even if this movie has something to offer beyond the unrealistic hotness and long hair, as the review suggests it does, I

Agreed, I find it inspiring.

Probably because the Netflix bigwigs have trigger-happy cancel-fingers.

I still sing the “I Accuse My Parents” song all the time.

He has 3 young ones. The New Yorker article actually says he manages to turn off the method acting when he’s with them, so that’s something.

There’s probably an attraction to living in heightened state, also to temporary self-erasure.  The point about empathy is interesting--like that’s the only way some people could experience it, maybe.

I can relate and I have a boring job.

I kind of liked the Strong article, but the New Yorker does make some questionable choices. They had the WASPiest guy in the world profile Donald Glover and the result was weird and queasy. Things are shifting culturally to the extent that I think if it was coming out now, only a handful of years later, they would

Same. I felt respect because this is a guy who has wholeheartedly pursued his passion his entire adult life.  How many of us can say that?

Yeah, hearing that the armorer was what, 24, and had said self-deprecating things on a podcast prior to the incident about her preparedness or ability, that was pretty concerning. It sounds like one of those perfect storm moments where various degrees of ineptitude, poor choices, and inattention resulted in disaster.
