I forgot about that. Takei is great, but I’m surprised he would have such a strict constructionist view towards Star Trek and Roddenberry’s original intentions. After all, if that view was applied by the SCOTUS majority to Obergefell, then I don’t think gay marriage would be legal in the country...

Meanwhile, on Babylon5...

This is a great look into a long issue that will hopefully be explored in the upcoming Trek series. I think it should also be noted that the new Star Trek films (Beyond, specifically) established Sulu as gay and introduced us to his husband. Maybe at some point their daughter Demora can make an appearance in one of

If you can afford multiple investment properties in basically any major metro area (especially the damn one in the header image), you are rich.

We own a condo that we are currently renting and while our tenants are awesome (hit the tenant jackpot somehow), the anxiety of ownership is sometimes more than I can handle and we have not had any major issues. The idea behind the rental income is nice, but we’ll likely sell the property if they ever decide to move

Agreed. A good friend decided to invest in rental properties. A few years after buying, she was transferred out of state and the housing market took a hit. As a result she was stuck with the properties (couldn’t sell because the market was crap), trying to rent them out from halfway across the country, dealing with

Yup, rental properties can be a great source of income, but the amount of work required can also make it a bit more like a “side hustle” rather than true passive income. I guess a bit of extra work isn’t the worst if you’re otherwise retired, but it’s not exactly comparable to throwing your money into an index fund.

I know several people who tried to “invest” in rental properties.  They all talked about how much of a pain in the ass it is to deal with renters.  Late payments, bounced checks, destruction of property, finding new renters, etc.  Too much of a hassle for me.

The problem with direct realty in general is it is an asset class that cannot be moved easily, has an extremely high conversion cost, has a high damage risk and has constant taxes/fees. Direct real estate is essentially high risk with expensive ownership costs. If a person is looking to diversify from stocks and such

If you want to have money when you are old, already be rich when you are young.

A lot of people has already said it lately, but it’s worthy to be repeated: this trend will make piracy skyrocket, and it will be the sole fault of greedy corporations. A lot of people, myself included, are up to pay for legal ways for getting content, but there’s a ceiling of reasonability that is about to be broken.

This is what struck me. The numbers are all like “oh, people spent a long time watching Grey’s Anatomy, Friends, and the Office.”. You know what those shows have? A LOT of episodes. Natural breaks that keep the pace breezy. i.e., something you can leave running in the background while you do whatever. Each episode

I actually misread your first step and thought you meant a stick, that was on fire, and then you invite all your friends over for a neolithic fireside storytelling version of the shows that people are streaming.

What worries me most is that Netflix says they are going to make more original shows- which is great, they have a fairly solid track record there- but they also seem to think 3 seasons of 10 episodes is enough. It isn’t.

I’m setting my limit at 3 I think. I pay for Hulu and netflix. Amazon is included with my prime so I’m not counting that, and I may get Disney as I have a young son. I haven’t canceled my cable yet, but with GoT coming to an end, and the NFL being basically unwatchable the last few years, I think it’s almost time.

Personally, I’ll pay for two with an occasional third. Recently I added HBO Now for GOT. In a month or two when that’s over and I’ve caught up on VEEP and True Detective and watched a few movies, I’ll cancel. I did the same thing with Starz for S1 of American Gods (no real interest in S2 without Fuller/Green at the

i think it’s pretty cool that someone’s going to reinvent cable and call it an innovation

I guarantee you that people are going to be having sex somewhere in the world every single day until we’re all dead.

I haven’t watched s2 yet, but s1 treated these encounters with reverence, but also took them over the top into a place where it couldn’t be mundane, it had to have a divine tint to it.

From all the descriptions of s2 it seems to have lost the reverence the scenes used to have.

New Media and Argus under Fuller would
