When I was growing up in Germany, “dealers” were showrooms. You went and looked and sat and test drove. And then you’d take an order form and ordered the vehicle as you wanted. You then financed it and/or paid a deposit and got the car some months later. The price was the price.

I have a hard time feeling bad on the gas prices issue for a society that has spent decades arranging life to live as far away from things as possible and to drive the biggest things to get there and to do it all in a way that depends on forms of energy that we know are eventually going to just run out.

I think this reticence is why plenty of people actually tip less up front than they would otherwise, because there’s no legitimate way to tie your tip to the quality of service without tipping cash, which many people are loathe to do for a variety of reasons.

I rented a Euro mid size SUV (which would be a small SUV here - think X1 or Q3) in the UK last month. Delivered an average of 50mpg. Allowing for UK vs US gallons, that’s still 40 mpg. Gas not diesel, 5 passenger, four doors and decent hatchback load space.
