I went from Tampa, FL to Anchorage, AK in a Saab 9-7x. Drove the whole way. It worked out well. Until I moved back to the lower 48 and summers led to the Vortec v8 case oil leaks.

I, too, didn’t catch the Honda in your story wasn’t a manual. So I was confused. I do agree that people need to learn a little bit about a lot of things; so they don’t cheated by repairmen, so they can fix things and save money, so they can fix things in a pinch, etc.
The Dodge Journey seems to be perfect for what it is: throw away after the factory warranty expires.

Toyota ventilators will be reasonably priced, dependable and have good resale value.
