I’ve had to do this. I once translated Atlanta English (speaker was an upper middle-class white kid) into Midwestern American English, for the benefit of English-speaking Russians who just couldn’t make it through the accent.

I was in a restaurant in northern Scotland, and the waitress walked up to my table and asked me a question. The thing about this situation, is that there is a pretty narrow range of possibilities in play, but I had no idea what she was saying, and I never did find out.

Somebody asked me a few weeks ago if I could go back and change my academic field (literature), what would I choose? No doubt, it would be linguistics. I’m fascinated by how language works, how accents developed and are learned, and by how language evolves. In another life would have loved to have been a dialect…

To be fair, the Gallaghers make little sense in any language.

I got a lot of family in Ireland some of whom went to different parts of England for work, i can understand them for the most part without much difficulty, but then drinks start flying and it becomes next to impossible to understand what my uncle who lives in coventry is saying.

I can't find it now but I am reminded of the first time MTV interviewed Oasis. About a third of the way through they started subtitling; about 2/3 through MTV gave up on that.

I find the science of accents fascinating. Usually, for some reason, your brain is able to interpret sounds that are close to sounds it knows and correctly link them to the proper word. This here is a case where that whole mechanism fails.
