No worries. I totally get why people think it’s a bullshit law, and I can’t find numbers saying what happens with idling vehicles that get stolen (crash rates, use in crimes, never recovered, et cetera), but still, it’s a problem that police are trying to curtail, and fines are the simplest way of doing it.

Fair point there. Although in all of this I did just read an article about a guy who stole an idling car, crashed it, and then went and stole another idling car. So anecdotal evidence that people may be less careful with a stolen vehicle.

How about some of these? Granted, I checked a StatsCan link and it doesn’t divide it up by how the vehicles were stolen, but there is evidence out there saying that it’s a common enough issue.

Yes, making laws for everything is ridiculous (granted, the Canadian Criminal Code covers a manslaughter charge for instances where you cut a hole in the ice in a publicly travelled area, fail to properly mark it, and someone falls in and dies, so lots of things are covered), but considering the frequency of people…

Suppose a kid steals your car and crashes it? Suppose an adult steals your car and crashes it? Harm can occur to others pretty easily with an automobile, so it’s not just a harm to yourself.

How they use their turn signals, either improperly or not at all. If they’re cruising along with their left turn signal on in the right lane, I’m steering clear. Likewise, if someone thinks they’re Speed Racer weaving through traffic without signalling, I’m gonna hang back a bit.

Not for traffic enforcement, but the day of the Parliament Hill shooting I saw a newer Subaru Outback and a second gen Escape fly by with reds and blues flashing.
