Thinking of writers like Ignatiy, Sean O’Neal, Emily Vanderwyff, etc trying to wrap their heads around an article minimizing the importance of Martin Scorsese...  it just doesn’t compute.

It’s unusable on mobile, and it’s only marginally better on desktop.  I don’t understand the strategy behind it at all, other than to just suck every last bit of marrow out of the bones of this poor skeleton before they finally grind it to dust.

Inasmuch as she wants to minimize the people who can take a percentage of the money coming from her fans to her, yeah, she seems to want to screw the system. And she has to power- and will- to do it, so good for her.

In the interest of steel manning the argument, I can kind of see a case to be made that there just aren’t that many new superstars nowadays. But that’s largely because of the fragmentation of culture- there’s fewer superstars because everyone’s able to just watch/listen/consume their own thing and not all coalesce…

Yeah, I read that quote and I just started shaking my head. It’s like hearing that a three Michelin star restaurant wants to reopen as a competitor to McDonalds.  Just... why?

The basic business of Hollywood. The higher your budget is, the more people you have to appeal to and the inherently less idiosyncratic your work can be. A24 has made a name on producing idiosyncratic work from artistic directors.

To be fair, though, it sounds like she gave the theaters a really good deal. She could have demanded a lot more from them up-front. Studios regularly take up to 90% of the first week gross.

The original is no less renowned than it was a month ago. It’s always been a series with one beloved original film, one underseen gem of a sequel, and the rest* garbage.

It’s weird even for the old shows. Burrows directed stuff like Friends. There were scenes where practically every line was a joke. Something’s weird about that quote for sure.
