Probably because they are cheaper than the real deal and are re-used. We always used old ass expired MOPP gear for training when I was in the military. Never broke the seal on the legit stuff.

Aerodynamics is much more significant when you get above 55 and most cars are limited in what they can do to be more slippery. Taller gear ratios have an affect but they are still working against a coefficient of drag.
