I don't even know why you're so upset with GT5:Prologue. There was about 2-3 years gap between Prologue and GT5. I have Prologue, the amount of content and updates that went into it was more than enough to be it's own game.

It appears that a model year starts when the OEM starts selling the version of the car that will be on sale as of January 1 of that calendar year. Typically, it starts a few months before the year actually starts.
