They don't just put ppl under, they also calculate the correct amount of pain medication, sedation etc. Especially if you want someone to not feel a thing during awake surgery and not end up with serious damage to various organs, you need a specialist.

I had a wisdom tooth removed and a titanium implant put in without sedation. I think it's an american thing to drug ppl who have dental surgery, because it's really not necessary at all. I don't know anyone who has had dental surgery who was sedated. All you get is local anaesthesia for the pain.
