I had an ‘85 GT also. When my wife wanted to knit me a sweater, I had her do it in grey with red piping like the seats in mine.

Iwas able to rescue a Beetle with the tip of a ziptie. The points were worn down to no gap, so a Swiss army knife was enough to shine them up and the ziptie set the gap. Pushed it , dumped the clutch , and away it went.

I’ve found a quick light wipe of acetone gets that brown, powdered layer off. Saves a ton of work!

Evaporated milk +corn starch is a common diet tweak for thickening sauces, but it’s not as good (of course!)

Ford GAA tank engine was shaft and spur gears also.

Hand assembly is not the issue here. Hand assembly without proper fixtures and tooling is. If there’s a procedure and fixtures to do the job, this wouldn’t happen.
