Hey—I respect that interpretation. I just don’t see it.

This was always going to be the problem with using those characters, in retrospect.

Hmm…that’s an interesting take on the character.

I think we’re arguing semantics at this point.

“Even this seems like a weird thing to complain about, for those that do. We know through the entire Force Awakens that Luke went missing, and didn’t want to be found. He doesn’t look happy to be found at the end.”

I mean...I said a bunch of stuff after that.

Sure. But I guess my point is that when you’re in charge of one chapter in an ongoing saga, you have to take into account what has come before as well as the expectations of your built-in fanbase and balance that against your artistic vision.

Honestly, I think the direction they went was kind of wrong-headed from the start.

I mean, that’s a fair interpretation but I—and a lot of fans—just don’t share it.

I actually think you make a really interesting point here. I guess I don’t really see that scene in RotJ the same way as you.

Hey—that’s fair. I don’t want to say anybody’s “wrong”. Film is subjective and my view is no better informed or more right than yours.

I feel like that’s a different topic.

So...I see this a lot and while I think there is some portion of the fanbase that’s disappointed by Luke because they wanted him to be “cooler”, I think the larger problem for most people that didn’t like the character’s turn is how Johnson handled his characterization and motivations.

I mean, I think there are many problems with the film. Some are structural and objective, some are purely subjective.

I don’t really think that’s fair.

This.

100% agree and I think that is where a lot of the backlash comes from.

While I completely respect what Gordon-Levitt is saying here, I think he may be misinterpreting at least some of the backlash to Luke’s portrayal.

Oh sure. But let’s be honest...the Trump administration doesn’t CARE. California is likely to see all but it’s safest red congressional seats turn blue in the next election and the state as a whole is firmly blue.

I get that, but to be fair BOTH candidates for President said that they had no plans to change the policy until they see more out of the states. And the states have been running their markets fairly well.
