I think it’s an unfair criticism, as it imparts something a bit different from an emdash. Emdashes are great for indicating a sentence was broken off abruptly, but not so much illustrating it trailed off.

If you’d read any English novel written in the last 200 years you’d see that it’s commonly used to indicate a sentence trailing off, a long pause between statements, and an answer or silence to a question.
