Not to mention, killing people from afar existed before drones. Obama didn’t invent this or even perfect it.

Because, as a former tool of the state myself, I learned how terrible our military truly is. You don’t need to be a member to see how terrible they are either. The rapes, the murders, the abuse. Fuck outta here with that “support the troops” shit. Our military hasn’t fought a just war since WW2, so don’t go pushing

We are being gaslit into oblivion.

Fake News is bad!??

Trump later called it a “failing piece of garbage,” and said it would “suffer the consequences”

Every time Trump says “fake news” remember that he spent five years accusing Obama of not being a US citizen.

As far as Guantanamo goes, he did at least try to make good on it, but it kept getting shot down. I’m willing to pin GITMO on Congress.

Should crime be solely about punishment or about rehabilitating criminals? If the former, why? What do we as a society gain from punishment if we don’t believe rehabilitation is possible? As you point out, Manning has displayed some erratic behavior that suggests she needs some degree of psychiatric help...not more

I know others have already pointed this out to you, but I don’t care: a commutation is not a pardon. Having your sentence commuted does not mean they are reversing the fact that you were found guilty.

Thank you! Said exactly what I was thinking. I’ve seen a few different people in the past 24 hours or so who say something to the effect of, “I’m suuuuper liberal, but I think that our barbaric, deeply flawed justice system is absolutely peachy!”

I agree that using drones causes less soldiers to come home via Dover AFB.I disliked the program for two reasons. It was a violation of a sovereign state’s airspace (pick one of several) and had the potential for/ resulted in deaths of innocent people beyond the intended target. That and it’s a pretty cowardly way of

I don’t think “rehabilitation” is about being THAT literal, but rather trying to get to the root of the cause and/or helping someone to develop the skills that would allow them to reenter society as a normal, functioning human being.

He ran and hid IN RUSSIA. Screw him. Manning at least faced her punishment.

I believe that prison should be a punishment

I don’t quite understand why the drone usage is such an issue.

There was a big outcry to get “boots off the ground” when he came into office. Given that almost no one on the right would allow complete removal of military might (anywhere), wouldn’t drones be the only way to do that without more soldiers being stationed

Generally how she’s been treated in prison.

Just going to point out that commutation of ones sentence does not absolve one of the crime. It does not remove the verdict. It does not remove the felony. Its simply a ‘and we’re now letting you go’ for whatever reason.

The article indicates that her sentence would be commuted to time served. What that means is that she would still be a felon, the conviction would still stand, but her sentence would be reduced to a point where it ended on the date the commutation was issued; in other words, she’d be able to get out the next day (or

It is not a pardon or anything of that type. The guilty verdict remains in place, she will still have a record. What it does is essentially say that the time she has served already is sufficient and the remaining time is wiped out. That’s it. It’s basically a reduced sentence.

I would be fine with a commutation.
