Years ago a British mechanical engineer friend of mine (whose daily is a manual) and I were in an auto car, and he didn’t use it and said in an auto it isn’t necessary. At that time my daily was a hand-me-down auto that I hated so was probably a bit of rage at not owning a manual

Why not an STI? I’ve driven the 340i and M3 and I’d venture the STI is more characterful than either - its not JUST a four cylinder, its a BOXER-4 and hence awesome :)

Muscle memory has nothing to do with this because there are no physical detents here the way there are w/ a “conventional” automatic (or manual) shifter. One has to use ones EYES to make sure the car is in park, and then wait for a moment to verify that the car is in park before exiting. I do this with my dad’s S550…

I don’t particularly grieve for this dude - Darwin and all that. However, beyond the deaths, this is a shitty shifter design. Unless the shifter is on the dash like Benz shifters, why can’t it physically move and stay in the detents for reverse, neutral, drive, etc., like a “normal” automatic?

Hell yeah fuckin right! If you KNOW the car has a shitty shifter design (which is evident within the first five seconds of stepping inside it at the dealer) why wouldn’t you be extra extra careful around the car??

The US is a great country but from these stories (and I realize they’re a small swathe of traffic stops in general) mann the cops are corrupt! I speed around in a Subaru STI w/ dark tint, and a cat-back exhaust here in Canada and have never had anything happen but a speeding ticket - AND i’m a person of colour.

The fair weather bikers in my neighborhood, which is located just off the high street, who razz their bikes back and forth make me want to shoot them. Harlies are pretty offensive but there is something grating about a bike I4 engine. Why can’t these tools buy twins or V4s!
