I grew up in Virginia.  I went to the University of Virginia, minored in History with a focus on American History, including the Civil War.  I wrote a freaking thesis on the Civil War (thought I was going to double major...it’s a long unimportant story).  To say that the Civil War wasn’t about race and slavery is to

Jesus Christ, this pedantry. So HALF the country fought a war to protect it. Then they continued to celebrate the people who fought that war for another hundred and fifty years.

Amazing how you’ve made it EVERYONE ELSE’S fault but yours. It’s Trump’s fault. It’s his base’s fault. It’s Republicans’ fault. It’s the DNC’s fault.

But when it comes to electoral votes from a state, it doesn’t matter where in that state people vote.  Dems don’t need to carry a majority of counties, just the majority of the state.  So Dems can move to Austin, or Dallas, or Houston and it’s just as helpful as them moving to Vega when it comes to the electoral votes

If Central and South America are empty, because they’re all now in the US, then isn’t immigration policy moot?

So four people were killed in a mass shooting in California yesterday, and the most important topic to the president is that a black man dared to call him on his bullshit?  So glad to see the proper levels of prioritization in his over-ripe peach of a head.

While I agree with you that Obama was definitely a step in the right direction, it certainly didn’t “fix racism.” I think we all have that uncle that sent plenty of emails during the Obama presidency that reminded us that racism is still alive and well. To continue my addiction analogy, Obama was like managing to get

I’m not saying that everything we’ve ever done is bad, but as a generality, most Americans like to argue that everything we’ve ever done is good. We have a shitty past. Most of the world does. But thinking that, as Americans we’re special is a pretty intentionally ignorant approach to take.

I think you’re missing the point. I’m not saying to give up and I’m not saying that America can’t become a better place. But it takes willingful change. And sticking our heads in the sand about our own history isn’t going to change anything.

Wow, you need to read more history.

Ah, I see. I misread and misunderstood the modifier. I was thinking hobgoblin crotch-spawn, not hobgoblin-crotch spawn.

While I agree with your sentiments, are we all, by definition, “crotch spawns”?

How long do you think he could be stumped by asking him to point to Israel on a map of the US?

“The category was ‘People who annoy you.’”

Agreed.  I wish we could collectively come to the conclusion that, if someone is offended by what you said, it’s offensive.  It seems that the burden of proof is on the offended person these days to prove how and why they were offended for anyone to think “maybe that person shouldn’t have said that.”

It’s extremely difficult to view yourself as being on the wrong side of history.

The “they hate our country” rhetoric sounds eerily like something Joseph McCarthy would be spouting. I guess that’s how we Made America Great Again?

Doesn’t the whole love it or leave it concept fly directly in contradiction to Make America Great Again?

He’s the healthiest American alive.  The Surgeon General said so.

I’d love to know the context on the “this has nothing to do with the health of POTUS” statements. Like, if those were out of the blue, I’d be very excited about celebrating his first (documented) stroke with a parade of tanks in a major city. But if it was in direct response to someone asking “does this have anything
