I am thinking, however, that at the youngest, that girl is in kindergarten, and probably more like 2nd grade. She is probably 6-8yrs old.

Wait, why is it so bad to explain real world consequences of your actions to children? Is that not your job as a parent? What it says to me is that society has forgotten that you are accountable for your actions.
