I take that risk daily, avoiding asshats. I too pay taxes, some of which go towards brand spanking new bike/jogging/walking paths throughout the city. We've given bike riders a place to play, stay outta the streets.

While you are correct that we MUST share the road, I've never seen any bikes follow any posted laws. Maybe its just the shitty bikers here in my city. If so, sorry to offend.
