I knew this was going to be mentioned. I know book eight was slow and book 10 a slog but after that it course-corrected, got very plot-advancing, and still was 14 books long. Maybe one book less wouldn’t have hurt, but it was long as it was epic.

Fun fact... “Ashla” was orignally a name coined by George Lucas for the Light of the Force and “Bogan” was the name of our old friend the Dark Side. He ditched the terms when he decided to simplify things during his re-writes.

I think my favorite implementation of this thought experiment is the Lakeside subplot of American Gods. I’m criminally under-read in several key areas, so I missed out on LeGuin’s story until after reading Gaiman’s take... When you experience it the first time, it’s so powerful.
