I look at the sum of the car, no rust, no torn seats, everything else works, if the engine blows it gets fixed. Its still only 5-7K vs 30K plus interest and insurance.

I hit a major repair, Head gaskets at 200,000 miles (and struts but that was normal wear and tear). Even with that sizable bill it would have cost me (at the time) 28K for a new car. Everything works, some parking lot damage, so I fixed the car.

Even a good used car with a bad transmission or engine (even after repair) is way cheaper then a new car. Used cars dont really rust anymore and that used to be the killer.

Its all my fault. I have a 2005 outback with 210,00 miles and a 1991 CRX with 62,000 miles. Both run like tops. I cant afford a new car, they are just too damn expensive.
