Stephen King does write a lot of trash. He's also written a lot great books. James Cameron has directed some great films. He's also directed some that were trash. Impact does not equal quality.

I enjoyed seeing it in the theater. It was a pretty neat experience, but that's the movie's great weakness: the only memorable or iconic thing about it is its setting and its presentation.

I'm sure the lack of sequels and merchandising has a role, but the fact remains that it wasn't that great of a movie and didn't have a memorable story or characters.
