There have been several discussions on Jalopnik along these lines regarding the E36 M3 - especially the US version. It’s alternately the most despised M car ever built or the most underrated (not the best - just the most underrated).

I have the coupe and drove a TA-27 with the 1UZ (V8!) the other day. The burble is really, really cool, but it’s better to have an inline six or inline four instead. The 1UZ is just too heavy for that (little) car.
