The stewards got it right. Marquez was riding outside the ‘spirit’ of the regulations in order to harass and slow Rossi. Rossi got irritated and broke the ‘letter’ of the law, mitigated somewhat by Marquez’s behaviour. Hence the medium penalty of back of the grid vs points/disqual/pitlane start/etc.
I think they’re both at fault. Marquez tried to ride into the side of him to slow him down. But it’s always been an acceptable part of the sport, even if MotoGP is as much a contact sport as F1 is.
I’m sorry, but Rossi was protecting himself after Márquez clearly road into him first, in the middle of a turn no less. Rossi established his line and it was clearly not appreciated.
