It is, isn’t it? Makes you wonder how far they had to go to chase the thing down, lol...

If you’ve got a magma plume coming up through previously stable layers, you’ve got a lot more trouble on your hand than some radioactive material.  Just sayin’... ;)

They were looking at using salt mines at one point. It’d be encapsulated by the salt layers and not move at all.  But... that wasn’t considered safe enough.  After all, what if the salt mine gets flooded?

No, it’s not. First, the waste would be diluted in the magma. Second, if you’ve got a volcano coming up through there, you’ve got a LOT more to worry about that a few hundred tons of radioactive waste getting pushed out and overlaid by an eruption.

Hell, I’m an ‘all of the above’ sort of guy when it comes to nuclear reactors whether thorium or otherwise, and fusion’s the end game as far as I can figure for our energy worries.

I remember one of the objections to Yucca Mountain was that they couldn’t GUARANTEE there would be no volcanic activity in that area in the next 10,000 years.

They didn’t learn from the Gawker collapse. They didn’t learn anything from the click-bait journalistas being dumped from Buzzfeed or Huffpo because of financial problems.

Why would you come to Gizmodo expecting facts? This place is a click-bait factory and doesn’t care about facts when they can go for sensational reporting that draws the eyeballs.

Well, they did. They’ve got the engineering problems solved. Yucca Mountain would keep wastes sequestered for 10-20k years, by which time the half-lives of the really nasty stuff would have long decayed. They’ve got transport casks that’ll take a solid hit by a locomotive doing 80 and not rupture.

“cant we move to solar, wind, water and kinetic generators?”

It depends. We were on vacation in Arizona once in midsummer pre-cellphone. Saw a ratty van by the side of the road, hood up, people in the van with the doors open. We weren’t on a busy highway.

I’ll agree - the pre 2014s didn’t look that good.  What do you think of the 2014 to 2019 styling?

“Buut it’s NATURAL!!!”

If you don’t take care of your teeth, they’ll get offended and leave. Then you’ve got to go to the aftermarket alternatives - but they’re never as durable as OEM parts...  ;)

Huh. “Too much work!”?

Not much gravity for a little chunk like that.  It’s amazing what we can do in space...

A fun one.  The last was... not so much fun.

It... has potential.  I’ll at least go see it.

So... a prototype tunnel to test a concept isn’t perfect?

Makes me wonder if a lot of the regulations on vaping are designed just for that - to get them to start smoking.  While I’ve seen that vaping can help long-term smokers break the habit...
