Oh, are foreign-born artists incapable of having distinct impacts on US culture? I’m not from the UK. I can’t speak to his (or Gervais’) impact there in the same way, and I wouldn’t try to.

NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast did a special short episode about Bowie’s death yesterday, which was originally planned to be about the GG. The association drawn between the two subject matters in the show was that Bowie was actually brave, a transformational figure in American popular culture that shifted how we…
But he also joked about Jeffrey Tambor as an old man “pulling him off” saying “at least [he] did it in a dress.”
watch his Jimmy Fallon performance from this last week He’s unparalleled. Clover posted about its brilliance. http://themuse.jezebel.com/yes-holy-shit-…
I thought her performance in Joy was one of her best yet. Better than Silver Linings by far. The movie wasn’t a fully realized work, but her performance was. I would’ve liked to have seen McCarthy or Tomlin take it home, though.
Room was super intense. It’s so real and small as to end up telling a story that’s fantastic and expansive. It’s a hard slog. But I felt much better for the journey. Kinda like Wild, which really had me anxious and pained at several points. But Room was definitely more trying.
My favorite moments
I pray every night for Gwen’s soul, currently in the clutches of beelzebub himself. Maybe a hit single will help free her from the fiery, camo hellscape he has trapped her in.
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a single piece of original scripted programming that came out of TBS, but I’m glad Cenac’s pushing for greater diversity there. Maybe with his influence they’ll actually create something watchable.
To be fair, the acronym for bae is just a white appropriation of a term that has existed for quite some time in black english. Bae actually is a shortening of babe or baby that I personally find much more tolerable and not quite as infantilizing. The whole “before anyone/anything else” thing is a more recent evolution…
I wonder whose idea it was to flee the fucking country. Don’t they know extradition exists? Were they just basing life-altering decisions on faulty movie tropes? They had already used up enough luck for several lifetimes with that parole sentence. It’s not like they were gonna live out their days peacefully in Puerto…
So, when the story was first reported, I read repeatedly that the police ordered Tamir to “drop the gun.” But the official narrative appears to be “show me your hands” or “raise your hands.” Where did the initial report come from that Loehmann shouted “drop the gun” that it was so widespread and persists still in many…
My grandpa found a high school class ring in a restaurant parking lot back in the 80s. He played guitar and sang in Mexican restaurants for a living and he was playing at this place pretty regularly at the time. But the owner was a jerk who my grandpa knew would just pawn it, so instead he held onto it and checked in…
Anyone who turns against a movement because it disrupt Christmas shopping was never going to be a meaningful supporter anyway. I’m not saying I think it’s the smartest or most effective strategy. I just don’t buy the idea that being a likable movement that doesn’t disrupt people everyday lives and private businesses…
She is one of, if not the, most important activist and academic of the last half century. Are Prisons Obsolete? should be required reading in every high school and for anybody employed by the prison industrial complex.
This isn’t a platform where content is separated into labels of opinion and non-opinion, though. That’s part of what differentiates blogs like Jezebel from platforms like newspapers that attempt to separate the journalistic enterprise from editorial content. I’d argue that this brand of feminist journalism rejects…
Not at all. As i said, she’s welcome to reject the label of victimhood for herself. That’s her business. Telling other women not to be victims is patently offensive.
Jezebel is not a single voice, it is a collection of varying feminist voices from different backgrounds with different ideologies who come together around the label of feminism. Did you even read this piece? There are specific editorial choices that complicate that from time to time, but it’s absolutely absurd to…
Jia, this was thoughtful and wonderful. A fitting end to a weird year.
I am so tired of Dash and her bullshit. But I’m even more tired of anyone telling women not to be victims. She’s welcome to reject that label if that’s how she deals. But victimhood is a word that means a great deal to many women who have endured trauma and violence, and there’s nothing about being a “victim” that…
