I would guess Nintendo dared not add HDMI or any other video output to 3DS because it would cannibalize what little Wii U sales they can generate.

I wasn't entirely sold on this, but every review to come down the pipeline lately plus a few from the Japan edition last year have me very interested. Really looking forward to your review, Jason, before I decide whether it's a release-day purchase or something to save for later.

This explains one of my major sources of frustration with Nintendo. Yamauchi apparently failed to understand that many of us don't want to own more than one console of the same generation, or cannot afford to.

Fantastic article and well worth your time (it is a LONG read). Also goes to show that for all their merits, Nintendo's executives had (and still have) a lot to learn about marketing, understanding Western gamers, long-term strategy and the importance of third-party support.

That's been my #1 complaint with my Wii U. I have about 200 Wii Virtual Console games I transferred over from my old Wii, and it's such a hassle to go into Wii Mode just to play them. I can't fathom why Nintendo hasn't moved the entire VC library to Wii U by now.
