Take gender too seriously?  Like people who assault and murder transpeople?  Or are just the people who want that to be a hate crime the ones overreacting?

You may see it that way, but it’s often said by the same people who assert there are only two genders.

As a transgender individual, I just wanted to say that the “assume their gender” thing is bullshit all around. It’s bullshit to get overly offended that someone, without malicious intent, didn’t get one’s pronouns correct. It’s also stupid as a joke and feels pretty offensive because it’s used to attack people like me…

That could be the original usage, but it’s been heavily co-opted to mock transgender people.

If I may suggest one thing it would be a change of title to “tweets joke with transphobic history/connotations” as I think that may more accurately reflect the situation as we know it without enflaming it while still conveying the troubled history of the phrase.

Jokes should be funny. A joke that punches downward isn’t funny.
