Though, in fairness, a transmission that is designed for an 80,000lb+ vehicle to be used at max rating for long periods of time and millions of miles is going to be a bit beefier than something that is meant for a 3000lb car running the strip in short bursts - however violent they may be.
Allison has the latest "9000" series that can take 4000 lb-ft input. It's still an automatic transmission. 6 forward and 2 reverse gears for extremely severe duty.
