I tell my ultra conservative wacky religious relatives that I love them. My understanding is that they’re twisted, miserable as only someone who is simultaneously terrified of and wanting to feel superior to every skin, gender, and religion variant that isn’t them. Why people go back to an abuser- or simply continue to have contact with them is a complex question. Sometimes you have a child in common, and a legal system that only offers you a piece of paper as protection from a known abuser that has caused you known injuries.
