If he can afford a suburban house, wouldn’t he be able to afford a similar house in a rural area? I’m not sure how it works in Virginia, but where I live a rural house isn’t going to cost more than a suburban one unless it has a huge plot of land. It just seems like this guys hobbies would be better suited for a rural

I agree. I have a ton of respect for veterans. I also don’t think they have a free pass to get away with stuff because they served. There are millions of vets. If they all did whatever they pleased, our society couldn’t function.

i’ll admit, a pink paint job with black garage doors is an extreme example. Also, I live in the Bay Area, so this house was going for quite a pretty penny, so the price deduction (they went as low as 18 grand under market price) doesn’t seem quite as bad compared to the total price of the house. But it still goes to

Or this guy could do the logical thing and buy himself a proper piece of land store his military truck on instead of parking it on the street.

The way it could effect property values is through the potential alteration of norms. Yes, one instance like this wouldn’t do much to the values in and of itself, but it can serve as a catalyst to the slow alteration of a neighborhoods norms. More may begin to park things like this truck, or other vehicles. The reason

I’ve already detailed this in other posts, so i’m not going to bother to repeat it for the third time.

Not cool, but at least it’s inoffensive.

Thanks.

That’s true. But as I stated in a different comment, some house prices are what the are because of perception, rather than the sum of their parts. Those properties would be decimated by a shift in perception, which could be catalyzed by something like a military truck being parked outside. The truck itself wouldn’t

I don’t care about controlling people. Not my thing. In fact, disregard my point about eyesores. If it truly didn’t hurt values at all, and didn’t violate any ordinances, then whatever. It’s when there’s an economic angle that I would draw the line. As I stated in a previous comment, I don’t live in an HOA and I think

The neighborhoods property values, not just mine. And please don’t tell me how to value my money. Thanks.

Agreed. I have nothing against collecting military vehicles, fire trucks, or airplanes. They seem like fine hobbies. I’d eventually like to buy some old Soviet bus myself. But i’d store it somewhere else. Suburban and urban life have realities that accompany them. Parking large, eccentric vehicles outside your house

Funny.

I don’t care about my neighborhood becoming a “slum” as long as the property values hold. And since you like anecdotes, i’ve got one too. There was a house in my town a couple years back, and the owner decided to paint it hot pink, with jet black garage doors. I drove past it, and wasn’t really interested until I saw

The values of some neighborhoods are determined almost exclusively based upon size, amenities, location, crime, etc. Tangible things. But other neighborhoods are prices higher than the sum of their parts. Whether it be interesting architecture, historical significance, or other factors, the value of some properties

They act like people should be fine losing money so their neighbors can exercise their “freedom”. Yeah, speak for yourself. Just as its his truck, it’s also my money that’s going away for no good reason.

If wanting a reasonably uniform neighborhood makes me a tyrant, then i’m a proud tyrant.

I never suggested it was.

Because you don’t care doesn’t make it fine. What if everyone else in the neighborhood hates it? Should they just leave if they don’t like it? Uproot their lives and memories because you want to do some dumbass shit to your house? It’s a stupid, antisocial mindset.

Never been there. I’ll take your word for it. The general quality of the cars doesn’t necessarily Change anything. Some jalops said basically the same thing when the guy decided to park a bunch of fire trucks in front of his house. “Oh, that neighborhood doesn’t look very nice!”. Ok, and? Should it be “ok” for less
