Since less than 3% of total CAS is provided at low level I quite sure that most troops don’t know which aircraft is supporting them. Anecdotes are not a proper way to build a force for the future.
How many countries do we have relations with that do the same or worse... I fear the list is too long to fathom. We aren't so innocent of those crimes ourselves. I strongly believe that dialog and the free market will is the best cure for despotism.
Helocopters require more maintenance and can tolerate much lower levels of component failure somewhat safely. I imagine the actual bill also includes things the Air Force doesn’t count int whir per hour cost. Also having 1,700 in service brings economies of scale.
