“Damascus steel” is a common term for pattern welded steel, and has been for at least 150 years. Also, how they made it isn’t lost to history, steel isn’t exactly a complicated substance. People still make crucible/wootz steel all the time, and modern steels are superior in every way.

You wouldn’t believe how often I have someone come at me because my knives aren’t “Real damascus steel”. It’s a touchy subject ;).

Wrong, but thanks for trying. It’s technically “Pattern Welded Steel”. The term “Damascus steel” originally refers to something called wootz steel/crucible steel that originated in India.
