Indeed. It was not until the turn of the 20th century that there were any real educational standards to become a doctor. Same with being a pharmacist or lawyer. But, there have been Ph.D requirements well before those above had any. 

Literally every college professor I had with a PhD or Ed.D was referred to by the university’s own material as doctors. Heck, I had an elderly woman from Europe as a client and she would refer to me as doctor even though I am a lawyer because of my JD. It was jarring but kind of cool.

I would have been torn a new one if I turned that slop into for a moot court competition let alone actually file it with SCOTUS on formatting alone. They wouldn’t have even got to the content and arguments before I lost the moot court case.
