And the reason that Alien was such a masterpiece has more to do with Dan O'Bannon and Giger than it did with Scott. 

It wasn’t Ridley Scott that made the Alien franchise as great as it is that honor goes to Dan O’Bannon and H. R. Giger for Alien and James Cameron for Aliens. Scott had the least important influence on Alien and the franchise.
