My husband, who is a chef, did this recently when we went out to eat and I was amazed. He just muttered under his breath about the problem to me and wasn’t going to say anything to the server. But I did. Because I’m a pushy New York Lady sometimes. We balance each other out like that.

Yup. I remember a particularly bad week in college that ended with my roommate and I buying a bunch of 5 cent plates from Salvation Army and destroying them in the drive way...and then sweeping up all the shards before someone popped a tire.

I also like to deploy a decoy drink if I don’t have a lot of cash to spend/don’t feel like drinking. Soda/Seltzer with a piece of lime in it looks like a lot of things and a lot of bars will comp you a non-alcoholic drink, or it will at least be less expensive.

I hate to break it to you but you’re wrong. I’m living this life right now and can tell you that the line cooks in regular old restaurants in NYC are NOT making 70-90k a year. Super fancy high end places? Maybe. Regular neighborhood restaurants? Nah dude.

Do you think every cook makes celebrity chef money? No. Making $11/hr as a cook is actually pretty decent in the industry (YMMV by market.) And has no reflection on anyone’s skills.

Although this does not (yet) describe my mother I feel a strong kinship here. At 70 my mom has lived in NYC her whole life, surrounded by people and restaurants of all ethnicities. She has traveled to foreign countries and enjoyed the foods of those countries. But I’ll be damned if I can get her to have lunch with me…

IDK my vegetarian roommate in college did actually used to order McD’s burgers w/o the patty all of the time. Well, when she had a hangover. So ....basically all of the time.
