I remember I was so hyped for PvZ2 cause I LOVED the first game. Downloaded it and was immediately super impressed with the nicer animations and the gameplay was as strong as ever.

I’m fine with the art style, but I really want to know how the microtransactions work in this one.  The way PvZ2 handled it made me not want to play the game at all.

When you have to both pay money and spend time doing something to form an opinion about it, yes, it can be.  Not everybody has unlimited time and money.  It can be very useful to see what other people are saying about a game before you decide to invest in it.
