I think the Cats movie was just a badly executed idea at a bad time. If they made it about 5-10 years, it probably would have been a hit. In 2019, going up against a live action movies Aladdin, Lion King, Rocket man and a couple of Avenger movies, the audience was just not in the mood to suspend belief one more time.

I loved what they did! They gave the show a needed shot in the arm and quite frankly they also treated their segment for what it was “a show to celebrate itself” not some solemn and honored event.
