On modern watches, gun sights, and exit signs, the glow comes from non-radioactive phosphorous on the inside of a boronated glass tube being bombarded by alpha-waves from radioactive tritium gas. The radiation triggers the glow, but isn’t the source of it.
The first use of this technology might be for war, but I don't see why you couldn't use the technology this unlocks to mine the moon or asteroids.
