Why not steal, er, borrow design elements from other cars? Not the first time it’s happened.
Not sure about the others, but BX had turn signals on those pods, and I remember riding with a friend in his parents’ BX, where he had a lot of trouble to work turn signals, it required him to move his hand off the wheel an reach behind it to press the switch. Was not impressed.

The OG Fiat Uno had some cool control pods close to the steering wheel. My grandmother had one when I was a kid and found it looked like something from a spaceship. Years later I noticed while watching Star Wars episode I that Anakin’s pod racer had this same controls as the Fiat Uno. I guess my younger self was right

Hah brings back memories. My father owned a succession of those as he drove 40k+ miles a year for work and thus replaced them every 3 years or so as he needed them to stay reliable. The TD ones, which before direct injection was a thing pulled all of 85HP (88 on the later ones). Felt fast enough at the time I guess...
Top trivia: the R21 had transverse or longitudinal engines depending on the model. Renault didn't have a transverse gearbox that would cope with the bigger engines.

It might be to have something similar to PSA Motorsport which does work on race cars and performance road cars on the same buildings and with team members going from one to the other, they also sell race cars and their parts through the retail branch of the group instead of doing their own thing.
Because bigger is heavier and require even bigger batteries to have the same kind of range so the cars would cost more and still won’t be ideal to do road trips.
