Nope. It was quite drivable, actually. Its purpose was to prove that ridiculous turbocharged power can be usable.
You were listening to NPR last night!
Definitely; it's very obviously dubbed on the dramatic speeding-to-the-corpse scene in "Out Where The Buses Don't Run," but still quite badass. We had Magnum P.I. and Miami Vice for ferrari sound porn, but today? Nothing. I guess youtube, but the little shits going around showing off are not as cool as Tom Selleck…
I don't know why I thought the LS6 was faster, but there were only 6 truly bad years of C3 performance. '74 still had the 454 and '82 had 200 (not net) hp, better suspension, and a 700R4. And it's not like the cars in between can't be made plenty fast with some minor modification.
He must feel quite burned out.
Oh that's right. Old GM engines are way too much to keep track of... I remember now that the Chevelle LS6 was more powerful than the Vette LS6. There was a planned LS7 I think, too. It is such a shame that never happened.
Yes, Miami Vice on Jalopnik! Much like the McBurnie Daytona replica didn't take away from the show, Phil Collins didn't take away from the pilot at all. I admittedly enjoy it in this case. The profile picture for my kinja is Don Johnson leaning on the Testarossa if anyone's wondering. Someone must be. The pilot…
The malaise didn't start until '74/'75. I'm pretty sure a 454 LS6 is the faster than an L88.
The 200hp cosworth 5 speed maserati one was a good car.
I know. I was referring to some other supras out there that aren't quite as fast. This Supra is pointless aside from the quarter mile, no doubt about that.
To be fair, the Supra has a 2JZ and maintains much of its original form factor. This is still not as impressive as the fact that there are 8 second streetable (stock interior, exterior, and block) ones not requiring the owner to be an oil prince with a hired driver, though.
Marty McFly would've been totally impressed by such a showdown. Speeds exceeding 140 miles per hour may occur. I don't know how much power a SBC loses after 134k miles, but factoring in Jalpa flammability and the fact that a 1985 L98 can probably cut diamonds as a testament to durability, I think it could be a dead…
Doug, this could have been an amazing post. But...
It would be interesting to see the corvette's top speed. 150 new, but with probably 2x the power and that 4th overdrive gear...
It's now considered a 327i!
Come to another C&C, Doug! I was without my license last time and I died a little.
I don't know whether I would let someone learn stick on my car. Seeing that a 4 speed camaro owner trusts their car with a learner gives me a little more confidence in my somewhat tricky 4+3 with its long, heavy throws and clutch travel. A lot of people who want to learn don't have access to any amply pedaled…
Ugh, this is why I shouldn't have clicked this post. Can you name a single reason why the C4 generation as a whole was bad as a sports car from 30 years ago?
