I just watched this episode a week or so ago, and as it always had before, the "I would never make a fool out of you" line stood out as some sort of odd moment, like Sorkin was reaching for something that he never came close to achieving.

Totally fair.  Probably just a case of a show having influenced my tastes in television disproportionately to how it influenced television as a whole.

All that said, it's certainly no crime that he just mentioned The Sopranos.  I just always preferred The West Wing.

Well, I think you're arguing two different things with Sex and the City.  Just because something had a big cultural influence doesn't make it a statement of great television; if you want to say that you have to acknowledge that reality shows have influenced culture far more than anything else, and I know you don't
