I can’t get too specific, but we machine FWD and RWD/4WD blocks. The crankshaft bore and cylinder bore are the same, but the sides (where accessories and engine mounts are installed) are very different.

In my experience, even the castings are different. You need different mounting bosses not just for the engine itself, but also accessories, as they also get packaged differently.
As an engineer in an engine block machining line, I can confirm that the FWD/AWD and RWD/4WD blocks are probably different.

The police officer closest to the camera in the cover photo is making the most stereotypical Russian face ever.

This is good advice. You also just want to make all steering/braking/acceleration changes as gentle as possible. The coefficient of static friction between 2 surfaces is usually greater than the coefficient of kinetic friction, after all.
