Dumb in so many ways, but here are a few more:

@djsmiley2k: Nah, the things I mentioned wouldn't be helped by server space — slingbox for example. These are personal tech needs — accessing music collection, downloading from the Tivo, accessing home automation.

@EdgarJPublius: I know, I grew up being taught that Silent Spring / DDT was all about saving the eagles. Turned out it did nothing for the eagles but killed tens of millions of people. Wow.

@Edie Spencer: Glad to do so. The author of the article I linked to (Doctor Zero) writes some of the best essays I've ever read — online or offline.

There are a number of great and worthy suggestions here, but please don't lump Rachel Carson into it. Anyone who thinks Silent Spring saved lives owes it to themselves to read this:

One instance when this would be VERY useful is for travelers. When I travel, I rely on access to my home network for file serving, backup, slingbox . . . any number of things. Nothing worse than 2 days into a 7 day trip finding out that the router has gone down and I'll have none of that for the rest of the week.

@darknite39: So true — the breast-mouse-pad is that little "feminine touch" that would put a woman at ease when she comes over to see your place. Totally.

@abackstrom: I wholeheartedly agree. The HP deal gives me hope. What's amazing is that the Pre has been out for eons in tech time, and yet is still a wildly great device. Imagine if they'd been keeping it up.

Seriously, HP buys Palm and we still can't get the Palm Pre listed in one of these graphics?? We 17 Pre users will not be IGNORED! (OK, maybe we will be, but we don't care cause we're over here in the corner, multitasking, with an excellent keyboard, great screen and an antenna that doesn't hang up the call when I

@neely615: Yeah, really an incredible little program. Based on it I realized that I had way more wireless coverage in my house than I needed and took one WAP offline. Never had a good way of determining that before!

@englishman: Does this mean the White House could finally get back their other domain? :-)

Has someone used (and liked) a similar tool for a Windows laptop? I frequently help friend with their WiFi setups and would love to have something more immediate and graphical than just checking the number of bars. Thanks for any tips!

@Seeräuber Jenny: There's no burden on the tipster, it's not like anyone is required to send in ideas. I suspect the overwhelming majority of tipsters would appreciate the nod, so this system asks the tiny minority who don't want recognition to state that preference, and in doing so it speeds things up and eliminates

@DanYHKim: Very informative, thanks!

Interesting how many users are getting their deliveries from FedEx. Mine is scheduled for delivery 6/23 from UPS. I ordered from AT&T.

I don't know. Even though it's free, the 3G doesn't sell me. I would much rather have wifi. If I know I'm going to be away for a day or two, I can get a few books beforehand. I don't really see the point in 3G for the nook (or any e-reader)

I pre-ordered at 6qm on 6/15, but my order sheet says "Date Ordered 6/16". My status still says "In Progress".

@Illundiel: Your strategy is interesting if not particularly convincing . . . write illogical and moronic things for a day and a half, and then say, "I was joking with my top post but have been playing along with you for awhile". In that case I hereby proclaim, anything I've ever stated that was stupid was, in fact,

@Illundiel: Normally I try not to spend too much time arguing with . . . people like you . . . online, but you're funnier than most.

Preordered mine at 6am on 15th through AT&T. My order still shows "In Progress"
