Have any national car companies started in 21st century America succeeded? I’m no fanboy, but you have to admit that it’s a pretty toxic environment to try to build anything from scratch in the automotive sphere. I tend to marvel that they’ve accomplished anything at all.

What pedestrian safety standards are there? Painting the crosswalks a brighter color? Automatic popup barriers that prevent vehicles from proceeding through the intersection when the crosswalk sign is on?

And distracted walking.  I remember in 2010/2011 timeframe, one of my friends got internet on his phone, and was one of the first I knew personally with it.  2009 was before widespread “connectivity”.
